PARALLEL : The Ramasun Station Art Trail explores possibilities of artistic engagement and expression responding to Udon Thani's sedimented ruins and multi-layered histories.

The Ramasun Station was once a U.S. military radio base camp during the Vietnam War. It now symbolizes one of the many origins of Udon Thani. It was the U.S. army settlement which laid the foundation for much of the province's urban infrastructure, including logistic, economic and tourism sectors. Moreover, the sex workers or 'Partner', shoeshine boys and rickshaw drivers were the new and the fastest growing occupations in that period.

The Ramasun Station was closed in 1976 when the U.S. retreated from Vietnam. For a period of time, some of the station's structure had been dismantled either by the army or the local junk dealers. As can be seen today, the remains of the station are the large architectural structures that are too hard to discarded; particularly the 48 antennas. These abandoned structures remained as an unintended memorial, a remnant of a time past.

As the wartime history of the site fades away, another layers comes to replace it. The U.S. radio base camp are transformed into a Thai military camp, and then turned into a museum. This landscape of military ruins is then a site of tensions and parallels. Instead of constituting themselves as an end, these contradictory and awkward entanglements lead to an unresolved complex mixture of the Ramasun Station's history.

And if the artworks are added to the site of this Ramasun Station as another overlapping temporal event? What would be the role of art? Would artworks be able to send messages when they are located on the site which is not a white cube gallery? Can art suggest, imply, or reveal other narratives, can it encouraging possibilities?  Or will art be lost among the melancholy of gigantic architectural structures? This exhibition sets out to make such an exploration.
